The Vermont 16th regiment served a well documented historical role in the Battle of Gettysburg. Regiment was hastily called into battle from guarding railroad supply lines and engaged in a 5 day march.

Towards the end of their march troops followed the sounds of battle and came into Gettysburg at Cemetary Hill where they engaged a much needed reinforcement that helped repell the famous Picketts Charge. This all happened in early July within the 60 days prior to letter mailing cancel date.

By the end of August the regiment was in the process if disbanding. Commanders of the Vt 15 regiment became Governor of VT and a congressman.
